THE GUBERA FAMILY came from the town of Solca in what was then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and is now Romania. They were German-speaking Roman Catholics of Hungarian descent. The name in Europe was Czubera but was Anglicized to Gubera in America. From about 1900 to 1920 various members of the family migrated to the United States, most settling initially in Kansas City, Missouri. Stefan Czubera, the earliest ancestor was born about 1835. His granddaughter Franciska Czubera married Maximilian Niemcow in 1903 in Solca and they had two daughters. He was the son of Onufri Niemcow and Emilia-Lucia Romanowicz. Leaving an unsatisfactory marriage, Franciska sailed to America in 1907 with her two daughters. After divorcing Maximilian she married Hermann Gerdes in 1908.
