CAPTAIN WILLIAM1 GERRISH (1617–1687), the first immigrant, arrived in Boston in 1639 when the New England colony was in its infancy. A Puritan, he was probably the progenitor of most that bear the name in America. He is thought to be a lineal descendant of Sir John Gerrish who was knighted by William the Conqueror for distinguished military service in the conquest of England by the Normans in 1066. It is believed the name Gerrish can be traced back to Robert De Guerrish, Duke of Brittany. From Massachusetts descendants of William Gerrish spread throughout the United States, some settling in Texas for a few generation and then moving on to Twin Falls, Idaho.
